ELA:Test Taking Tips for Students
Come up with an answer BEFORE looking at the answer choices.
Read ALL of the answer choices first before eliminate the ones that don’t make sense.
Look for negative words in questions:
What is the opposite of …..
Which one is not included….
All of these happened except…
For vocabulary questions, read the sentence with all the word choices offered and eliminate those that do not make sense or sound right.
Look for key words such as first, then, next, then, finally and after when sequencing events.
If asked about cause and effect, look for key words such as since, because, as a result of and therefore.
The main idea of a passage is often at the very beginning and it may be stated again at the very end.
Do not leave any answers blank. If you’re not sure, make an educated guess.
Skip the questions you don’t understand. Fill in your best guess, then mark the question and come back to it later.
SUMMARIZE: Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then (remember to use this strategy when working on summary questions)
